This claim may be wierd from a scientific point of vew, but it's the 
widely accepted Italian folk wisdom. Italians talk of seasoning their 
pots in the same way that Chinese chefs talk about their woks.
In fact, there are many more sizes available in Europe than in the 
US. Here we have the 3, 6 and 12 models only. In Italy, tiny one 
cup jobs are fairly common and 18 and 24 cup pots are commonly 
found in hostel and mountain hut kitchens over there.

I think you can avoid the burning/scorching just by quickly 
removing the coffee from the heat when it's done.
