Hi, I got a note from Scott, and he said that he had found a vendor in San
Diego - and was interested in forming a group buy. I haven't been able to
locate the vendor, but then haven't looked all that hard. Just wondering if
there were still any folks interested in a group buy?

John,
I believe I'd be interested in getting in on a group buy of HotTops. I
need something that has a bigger capacity than my HWP!

I read Tom's write-up on the HotTop, but that is the extent of my =
knowledge about it. I might be interested, but need to have some ides of =
the general price range. (I am suspecting that it may be out of reach =
for now.)

6) From: Simpson
I'd be interested depending on price.

It might very well be out of reach for me, too, but I'd like to know
what kind of money we're talking about. I'd sure like one if I could
swing it.
Has there been any word on what changes they're making to it, if any?

Thanks for looking into it but I think I'll pass since I can already push it
for a 1/2# batch when I want and to at the profile I want. I'll Rosto roast
'till I get around to building a drum roaster for pound+ batches...

I really need to apologize to the list - Scott asked me if I would see if
there is any interest - and I should have pinned him down for more details.
I thought that he would be on the list today and would field all these. I
guess my roll was to just see if there was interest. Of course there is, but
I don't have enough detail for follow-up - - MY BAD!!
I'll just back away and watch to see if Scott picks up on this - otherwise -
sorry for the ruffles.

I'm into the "build my own" crowd as well. I really learned a lot about how
the drums work while debugging and making manufacturing suggestions to Yang
Leu in Taiwan. The problem isn't the control or even the heat, its getting
the mechanics worked out - at least for me.
I simply posted the query for Scott (the Oaklahoma Variety) and really
didn't have any information other than Vineus being the probable vendor. I
probably just stirred an empty pot - but then...

No, let me guess: This is all an elaborate ruse set up by you, Mike
(aka "I've got too many variacs, but not enough to let Mark C. have
one" Mike), and Mike (aka "Hey, Mark, don't take it personally that I
got the variac you wanted and now I'm thumbing my nose at you" Mike).
You're going to arrange to buy HotTops for $100 each, 30 folks on the
list here are going to get them, but I'll be the 31st one on the list
to get want one, but they'll only sell 30 "at this price". Right?
Mark "just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get
you" C.

I'd certainly be interested in participating in a group purchase as well. I
also live in the San Diego area and would be happy to check in on this
vendor to verify the inventory stock. Nothing's worse than getting your
hopes up, sending your money, and then waiting for 3 months on some silly
backorder list...

Just curious-how many people are either considering or planning to build a
drum roaster? Had my heart set on a hot top and when that died-built my
drum-happy as a pig in Kopi Lupak with my drum. Got better results on
second roast than any of my previous HWP roasts and have had the HWP for
over 3 years. The careening into drum roasting has been fun.

Hey Mike, if you set the drum shaft at an angle it will rock the roaster all
by itself! ;O)

21) From: Oaxaca Charlie
Hey John, having the drum sitting on rollers it's easy enough to
offset the end plates ,which on mine are bigger around than the
drum. Then the drum actually does rock, and agitation (and
rythmic sound!) improve dramatically.

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
As to the price of the HotTop. I inquired a while ago with the source.
Below is the email track if you are interested.......... Check out the
freight fee. I forget where these things are made. Somewhere in Europe
I think.

Our price is uS$600 and the freight fee about $120.by Fed express.

Jeff, that would be from Taiwan. The vendor in Irvine, California is buying
them by the pallet in a container shipment. Shelley is the person who
directed Scott to Vineususa.

I am considering it, but also working on ideas for a larger air roaster. =
I know that a drum can be more straight forward. I guess I like being =
able to see the beans and my aerodynamics background make it sort of =
intriguing. But I am certainly considering the drum as well. So far it =
is nothing other than a few thoughts and a little tinkering...

As much as I thought I would like a HotTop, I think I will wait and see what
the new Hearthware is all about. It is late as usual, but they have supported
their products in the past and I wish for great things to come.
