Well, I'm partial to moka pots as I've grown with them. As a grad
student, I don't expect being able to buy a real machine soon but, in
my experience, a lot of people who buy expensive machines end up making
inferior coffee to what I can get from my pot.
In fact, roasting my beans and using, yes, plain braun grinder, I'm
almost getting exactly the coffee I want.

Hey I'm a grad student but it hasn't stopped me. (of course I'm a
full-time engineering manager ;-) , with a cheap machine)

True. I just heard about someone who had a fancy looking La Pavaloni
(?sp) that had dinner guests and didn't even mention espresso, just
poured from the pot. But then they seemed to be into collecting all the
'right stuff'.

Fair warning, while you are undoubtedly in the 95%'tile with coffee, but
once you get the coffee you want, you won't want to go back.
