Hello everyone.
I have been roasting for only a few months but have learned a great deal
thanks to the wealth of experience so graciously shared by all of you.
I've a long way to go but am enjoying the roasting/brewing process as
well as the occasional special tasty cup. Never thought making a cup of
good coffee could feel so rewarding but it does. Never thought the
history of coffee could be at all interesting but Mark Pendergast
entertained me for two weeks with his book Uncommon Grounds. Never
thought I'd look forward so much to opening my Home Roast Digest and
reading about what the BBQ (& brick over) roasters have created,
how a Silvia PID project is going, how some new beans are tasting,
a little OT philosophy for good measure,a good deal here and there,
problems solved, roaster tweaks, grinder tweaks, a lesson in
electricity, etc. etc. etc. Much of the time I am in
awe of the vast collective knowledge and technical skills brought to
bear upon the seemingly simple goal of making a cup of coffee.
Now I am splicing wires and cutting holes in poppers, listening for the
UPS truck, looking at Variacs on Ebay, blending this bean with that,
brewing in moka pots, french presses, vac pots, filter cones. I make
notes and take measurements. Sometimes I feel a little silly. I have to
be careful not to go on and on and on with friends. I must find a better
espresso machine that will fit into my ever shrinking coffee budget. The
progression has begun. I sense a knowing nod from the many who have been
this way before. I nod back; a nod of thanks.
Best regards,
Kenta
