Topic: Roaster Recommendations for a Newbie (14 msgs / 355 lines)

Hello friends:
I am new to the list, and am just now exploring home roasting.
I have laboriously studied the different home roasting devices and have
somewhat settled on the Alpenroast.
Would anyone please care to comment based upon their experiences with this
machine?

Joe,
I don't have an Alp, but after being on this list for a while, I would 
never buy one. My suggestion is that you save yourself about $300 and go 
find a poppery II at a flea market etc. for about $2 or $3. Use that for 
a while, listen to the list, then decide after you've gained a little 
experience.

I was considering an Alp until I joined the list. When I read about =
someone being on their 3rd Alp before getting one that seems to work =
reliably I am not encouraged. It may have all been under warranty, but =
when I spend close to $300 for an appliance I expect better reliability.

Alps died after 200 roasts.
When did you get your replacement, I called about 3 weeks ago and they =
said they were out, and would not get any until the new container from =
China came late spring.

After 16 years of popcorn poppers, I bought an Alpenrost last spring. It
took some getting used to.  After about 200 roasts it just quit. It took
Swissmar a few weeks to get me another one (with helpful prompts from Sweet
Marias). Second one seems to function well. It is well-constructed but it's
weak point is the circuit board control--it doesn't control anything really.
There are work-arounds however, it is not a good roaster to start out with.
While not my ideal roaster, I make do with it. I like it's half pound
capacity.

Move up to an Alp from Caffe' Rosto? That is indeed a matter of opinion
which I for one do not share. Move up in price yes, in capability or roast
quality or roast capacity not necessarily. I doubt the Alp is as versatile
as the Rosto *can* be. Consider, using dual variable transformers, the Rosto
can do from 2 or 3oz to 8oz weighed batches no problem. Any profile desired
from 5min Dark French to 25min Light City and anything in-between. With
modifications of course. But at no more total cost than an Alps. (unless
someone tends to get carried away...:-)

Marius, that was a nice post, and a positive post for the new home =
roaster that may want to start out with a 1/2 lb roaster. My Alp is a =
bit hotter then yours. If I set it on 12 I would end up with a Spanish =
black roast. All the Alpenrosts are a little different in profile, of =
course input power, and outside temp. has an effect also.

I started with a borrowed WBPII, got a HWP (older black model), a
Melitta Aroma(willnot)roast, FR, HWG, 'wb', HIP (newer white model) and
an ALP.   The HWP is worn out - won't move the beans well, even with a
new motor.   The HWG pcb died, the replacement pcb died also.
Got my ALP at 1/2 price - new-old-stock at a local cook shop   :) :) -
(the same price that Hearthware sells the HWP on their web site.)
I use the ALP amost all the time now - no problems after 50+ roasts.
Roasting in an unheated garage, I can hear the cracks over the noise of
the machine.  I don't have to be concerned about smoke, so the smoke
and odor are usefull clues for roasting.   I roast by sound, smell &
time.
The 8 oz. capacity is a big plus, and I like the TASTE of ALP roasted
beans better that air roasted beans.
On the other hand, you can't see the roast progress, and mistakes are
bigger with the Alp than with most air roasters.
If my Alp quit today, I'd probably get another one tomorrow.
I prefer the Alp to any of my other roasters.
2nd choice - HIP  (out of production)
3rd choice - 'wb' (out of production)
I am real curious about Hearthware's new roaster - coming later this year.

As a newbie to roasting with an Alps (3 roasts so far) and a newbie to 
this list although I have been lurking,
I feel I am especially qualified to remark on this post :-) :-)
I disagree.
 I think the Alps is easy to use, you just need to do some home work, 
read the manual, read Sweet
Marias' tip sheet, read the archives and visit other sites. Oh yes, and 
buy a scale.
For a reference I used R.N. Kyle's post +3rd Alp 9Feb 2003
Following the directions I roasted 225g  at 8  After cooling shut down I 
put the roasted beans in a metal collander,
 "rested" them in an open Ball jar for 4 to 5 hours and capped it for 
grinding the next day.
I got a "City Roast" and learned what the first crack sounded like. Also 
learned the smell of roasting then cracking beans.
Second roast: 225g (All were Columbian Huila) at 10
I got a "Full City"
Third roast: 225g at 12
Here I learned what the second crack sounds like (dropping uncooked rice 
on a marble counter :-)
I got an "Espresso Roast".
All of the above were ground with a Solis Maestro and brewed with a 
Technivorm drip.
All made good coffee each roast having something different to offer (The 
role of "roast" in taste
is notable among other things).
Roasting your own is GREAT!!!!!!!!
