Rick Farris' fine post of Feb. 15, 2003 "What Coffees to Buy"-got me =
into improving my comparison drinking. (It isn't cupping what I do--two =
demerits on my CSA card)-Thanks Rick-I must keep rereading the post to =
move me foreward.
I invited two friends for some Indian Monsooned my friend from SF picked =
up for me from SM. I roasted two batchs-both were a bit mixed as far as =
roasting stages-but batch one was mixed to the darker end although all =
beans were without oil and batch two was quite medium-but the taste =
difference was very slight. (The roast rested 38 hours).
We were all a bit surprised that both brews were a bit on the thin side. =
Then i got to thinking that maybe it has to do with a weight volume =
problem.
I seems that the Ind. Mons. is about 30% lighter per volume than "most" =
beans. My HWP scoop was only about 50 grams when foll.
QUESTION: After ROASTING and GRINDING will my 7 oz coffee scoop give me =
about 7 gramsof Ind. Mons or more like 4-5 grams. Does Roasting and =
Grinding generally bring the different coffees into the same range of =
weight/volume?

Myron,

I think you would get the best results taking all measurements by weight
instead of volume. In my experience, volumes for the exact same amount
by weight of different varieties of beans vary greatly both before and
after roasting.

I would add that in my experience with Malabar Gold, which is also
mainly monsooned (and therefore swollen) beans, a 60 gram batch in
the HWP tastes smoother to me than the 80 gram batches all other
beans take.
Best,
