I have listend to so many talk about the Miss Silva, the Solis and now
someone tosses the ECM Giotto at me.
help me out here, I checked an the price is up there, like 1200 greens.
can I have some opinions?

	There are levels and classes of espresso machines. Each offers something
unique.  The ECM is considered the very best home brewer on the market. It
has taken the honors at a couple of head to head contests with a half dozen
competitors. It has the ability to steam and pour at the same time -
something my Solis doesn't have.  It is a great machine if you have the
skill to use its power.  The Miss Silvia is really great machine and does a
good job at about everything.  It has the honors for a mid ranged machine.
It is also offered by our host - so you have to know its good.  Mike
McKoffee will jump in here and rave about her - but he's in love!  My Solis
Master does a great job and I don't have to grind or tamp - but I had better
want a lot of what ever bean I have in the hopper because its hard to change
beans - you will have to waste a couple of shots to clear the system when
you change beans.  BUT I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything (and
have a La Pavoni in the shed because of it).    You get what you pay for in
all three units - it just matters about what you want.

Hi Ginny,
There's a class of machine, still designed for 
homes, that is one level above standard home style 
machine. These are the small heat-exchanger 
Regular home machines have one smallish boiler, 
from 5 to about 25 fluid ounces, that is set to 
one temperature to brew espresso, then a higher 
temperature to steam milk. One has to wait to 
switch from one to the other, and it's very 
difficult to make more than about 2 or 3 milk 
drinks in a reasonable period of time.
Heat exchanger machines have a larger steam 
boiler, from 1.4 to 2.5 quarts, that can steam 
continuously. In addition a pipe (the heat 
exchanger) runs through the boiler, heating water 
to brewing temperature, so one can make espresso 
and froth milk at the same time. If you plan to 
serve espresso drinks for company, this is a style 
of machine that won't have your guests looking at 
their watches and tapping their fingers (been 
there, done that, paid out the money).
These machines are substantially larger, and are 
closer to a kitchen fixture such as a range or 
fridge, rather than a countertop appliance that 
can be moved or stowed. However, they do make 
somewhat better espresso, and more conveniently 
too, to pay off their space rent.
The least expensive current models are the Expobar 
Pulsar and Nuova Simonelli Oscar at about $750. 
Most of the popular, prettier looking, models, the 
Pasquini Livia, Isomac Tea and Millenium, ECM 
Giotto, Mini Wega, run around $1000 to $1200.

use boiler) machine that needs to transition between brewing temps and 
steaming temps.
If you're willing to spend $700 or more, then you're moving into Heat 
Exchanger machines (HX) that use the boiler exclusively for steam water, 
and a pipe of sorts runs from the reservoir through the boiler, to the 
grouphead for flash heating water for brewing. Thus, you can steam AND brew 
at the same time.
Decide which class of machine you want first - how important is steaming 
quickly to you?
