So... who's going to the SCAA show this year in Boston? Anyone figure out
yet if they'll be doing beantown in April?
This past weekend I was at the Barista Jam, and I gleaned a lot of news
(and some rumours) as to what might be going on at the show:
Roasting News
- a brand new roaster for home use from a company you don't know (hell,
neither do I) might make an appearance
- rumour has it that Hearthware may have a prototype of the new roaster at
the show
- existing roasters will be there in force, save one (as far as I know):
Zach and Dani - they aren't attending. I tried my damndest to convince
David Howard they should send someone at least to attend.
Bean News
- there will be a cupping and blending seminar open to the general public
on the Monday of the show
- details are STILL not worked out, but there are plans in the works to see
if Ken Davids is up for giving an exclusive "talk" to charter eMembers,
Alties, and people from this list if they so choose (and attend)
- ditto on the details: plans are in the works for a major walkthrough tour
hosted by one of alt.coffee's most beloved oldbie industry guys (you figure
out who, and it ain't Barry Jarrett), which would be a 2 to 3 hour tour of
the show, organized stops at various booths of interest to consumers, and
what I hoping for: LOTS OF SCHWAG! :) (that means free samples).
Tom News
I think I've coerced Tom into sitting on the panel session of a seminar I'm
giving. Maybe even Maria too :) If you don't spot Tom all weekend, here's
your chance :) :)
Espresso News:
- first, there's the gauntlet. IT was an on again, off again thing (mainly
due to union issues). It's on again... if you make opening night, you get a
chance of being handed a poifectly brewed shot by one of the 20 (or so) top
Baristi on the PLANET. And you get to keep the cup :)
- The theme for this year's show is espresso, and as I've been watching the
exhibitor list expand, espresso machine makers are well represented this
year. I'm very jazzed by that.
- The US Barista Championships AND the World Championships are open to the
general public, no admission fee even required.
Lastly, and this is something my committee at the SCAA is discussing: we're
thinking that maybe if an altie or someone on this list or CoffeeGeek pays
for the full pass to the show (all 3.5 days), a major discount for
eMembership may be tossed in. No promises, but I'm pushing hard for this
initiative (running into minor roadblocks from the money guys and gals).

Well, since I'm already here in "The Hub of the Universe", I'm hoping to
go. (And hoping some kind retailer or SCAA insider will provide free or
reduced price admission ;-) )

I'll be there. I hope to meet as many list members and alties as possible.

I'll be there as well. Of course, I am fortunate this year as
the SCAA show this year is only a short T ride for me! I wish I
could host a couple people, but my 3 room (including kitchen)
apartment does not leave much space...
I do hope to meet many on this list as well.
Regards,
Matt Hodges

Note: even if you don't pay or don't get a pass, you'll be able to watch
both the US and World Barista competitions for free, as it will be held
outside the doors of the convention and trade show floors.

Hey Mark,
I've checked the SCAA website several times and never see anything
posted about 'e' membership. What's the story?

right now, it's a matter of dotting the Ts, and crossing the i's (uh,
something like that) before the official info is published.
We're still debating what to give with the membership when they sign up
(goodies, though we're close to final on that), pricepoints, category
names, etc.
I'm basically the voice on the committee that is saying "no, more... MORE!!
Give them MORE!!!" :)
