Well I traded in the trusty Saeco Rio Vapore, Solis Maestro and Charbucks
tamper for a Rancilio Silvia Espresso machine, Rocky grinder and Reg Barber
Tamper (kept my homeroast of course). Can I just say WOW! I thought I had my
original setup utlimately tuned. I was getting nice thick crema and full
bodied shots. I THOUGHT I was getting nice thick crema and full bodies
shots. Now armed with a perfectly fitted and weighted tamper, a machine with
lots of pressure, a grinder that holds it's grind (and my roast of course) -
what a difference. My tamping technique is even and flat - not like the
convex result with the old tampter. There's no manual pre-infusion attempt.
And the shot? Dark thick crema, full bodied shot. Just like you read about.
Save your pennies if you can - if you're into espresso and getting the most
of your roast - this is a great upgrade.

Leonard,
Your set up is missing a THOR tamper! You can't beat the feel of an all
wood tamper! I am glad you are enjoying good shots! You have just made my
case that the tamper does make a big difference. I bet if you would have
had a good tamper with your first setup you would have noticed a big
difference. The three professional shops that are using my tampers
continue to comment on how much better their shots and consistent their
shots are now that they have a tamper that fits properly.

Looks like a good set-up. I have the Rocky grinder and I would like to
move from the SL-90 to the Miss Silvia. When I do, I will go for a
Thor Tamper. The only reason I don't get one now is that I'm looking
at changing filter sizes.
