Sounds like what you need to do is cool your unit to get a slower 
roast.  I'm not familiar with the FR, except seeing the pictures on Tom's 
site, but maybe there's a simple modification you could make, like drilling 
a small hole somewhere to cool things down.  If that makes it too cool, you 
could just partially cover the hole until you get something you like.  The 
hole couldn't be too large, otherwise you'd lose the lift for the beans 
(and maybe get chaff leaking out).
There are certainly more elaborate things you could try if you're a 
tinkerer, like some other brave and talented souls on this list (not me, 
unfortunately).  Those could involve finding the lines to the heating 
element and sticking some sort of rheostat on it, fooling with the 
thermostat, and stuff like that.
Or you could take the lower tech, though somewhat more labor-intensive and 
less-convenient route of using a stovetop popcorn maker, which by its 
nature gives you more control (maybe too much) and a less acidic roast.
