Topic: Indian coffee (15 msgs / 500 lines)
1) From: mikejfoley
After reading Tom's review of the Monsoon Malabar, I for one couldn't
resist. Though, I wouldn't rate it up there with ‘nectar of the
gods’, it certainly is very good, and quite different, certainly not
‘sewer water’ either. Also, I've had the pleasure of trying some
‘Mysore Nuggets’ that were very good.
The thing that got my attention when I first got the MM, was the color
& the size of the one-pound bag. Also, compared with others that I've
had since then, the MM from SM's is a very clean looking bean, while
some others were mottled and had a grayish hue. That clean bean, also,
made the best cup.
Another surprise I've had recently, is a coffee from Laos, called
Bolaven Plateau. The beans look similar to the MM, but are a bit larger,
and have a much richer golden color. One of the better cups that I've
had to date, it's very rich & sweet, with almost zero acidity. Other
than that, I know almost nothing about it, but that's plenty for me.
Afterall, it all comes down to the cup, doesn't it?
Just kicking in my 2¢ worth, on the Indian thing, with a side trip
to Laos thrown in for good measure.
                            Regards, Mike F.

I am new to the list but have really enjoyed reading the posts over the last
few weeks. I have a question but need to give you a little background. I
work in IT for a large express delivery company. Many of my co-workers are
from southern India residing in the US and some in India. Several even have
experience working on the family coffee plantation and display a real
passion for coffee. In our daily conversations, I mentioned that I have
taken up roasting and would like to sample some of the beans from their home
areas. After a few e-mails I received a generous selection of beans and
would like some advice on roasting using an IR2. I have read that these
could be used as part of an espresso blend. Has anyone got some advice or
roasting suggestions? Thanks.
The samples include:

Indian Plantation "A"
Indian Plantation "PB"
Indian Robusta Cherry "AB"
Indian Robusta Cherry "C"

Unless they have been cupped by Tom, they will be great test coffees, but
not so great to drink in all likelihood. I work with 3 doctors from India,
the greens I got from them reminded me of the old days 20 years ago. The
coffee was better than Foldgers, but nothing to write home about. Sorry to
rain on you parade, but don't get your expectations up too high. Good India
coffee is one of my favorites, I am down to two pounds in the stash.
(Monooned not counted.) I ususally roast them to a full city.

The first 3 coffees should not give you much trouble in roasting. You may
have to try different profiles to bring the best out of the beans. As Les
implied, use these to get an education on roasting.
You will have to work much harder on the robustas to remove the rubber and
vending machine tastes. Roast these with the maximum time available (15-20
mins) stopping at the first snap of second.

Charles,
A couple of suggestions since coffees from India are on the top of my
favorites list (especially in all India blends).
Since these are not from Sweet Marias and there is none of Tom's
professional advice, you might still want to visit the SM website and browse
Tom's recommendations for the various coffees he's stocked from India. I
have often referred to his Archives for info on past coffees that he no
longer stocks:http://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.reviewarchive.a-f.htmlhttp://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.robusta.html
I typically do pre-roast blends of several Indian coffees which include a
Mysore Nuggets or a Plantation coffee, a Malabar and an Indian Robusta.
Usually, I'll take them to 10-20 seconds into 2nd C, but of course your
tastes may vary.
You might try a blend with those coffees something like this:
Malabar - 50%
Plantation (A or PB) - 35%
Robusta - 15%
I have a blend very similar to that except that I use a bit more Robusta
20%.

Had dinner here on LI last night with friends who grew up in Bombay.
The restaurant had only regular coffee and masala tea, but they urged
me before I went back to Chicago to visit one of the snack shops
along Hillside Ave. and try Madras coffee, brewed in some sort of
metal inversion brewer that sounded similar to the drip brewers used
for Vietnamese drip and Thai iced coffees. (If I don't manage to try
that, I can probably find it somewhere along Devon Ave. once I get
home). Anyone here ever try Madras coffee and if so, is it just the
method or the beans? From their description, it sounded as if it were
mainly Monsooned Malabar.

I've never tried Madras coffee, but at your mention I had to investigate.
Finding a shop and watching the final preparation before service would be
worth the trip.

8) From: silas coelho
I will be traveling to India in mid august (Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry,
Maharashtra-Pune and Delhi), and I want to visit some coffee farms there. I
know that they do have Pulneys ,Sheveroys and Nilgiris plantations there,
but I'm not sure how accesible are the farms there, to be able to visit
then.
Anyone had any experience with India coffees?
Grato/Regards
Silas

I was in Hyderabad in the end of 2008 and was thinking that it would be
great to check out Indian coffee and maybe get some monsooned Malabar, but
didn't have time to venture out.
Now I'm in Milan and it looks like I may not have time to venture out to
find a good coffee bar, but there's hope yet, I may have to stay through the
weekend as the equipment is still stuck in customs.

Chris,
My wife and I are traveling to Hyderabad at the end of December to go to a wedding. Can you point to any coffee
plantations in the area? If we have some free time we'll go exploring.

there is an outstanding coffee/wine/cheese store in Milan called Peck (http://www.peck.it),which offers some decent coffee. I have been there few
years ago, but still 'unforgettable'
Try and enjoy!

Frank,
I never did find out if there was any coffee grown near Hyderabad and didn't
really even do any sightseeing (not even making it to Charminar) so I'm not
much help.
Enjoy the trip, though and let us know what you find.
