As promised a few months ago, I have submitted a new version of my Palm-based database for storing roasting information. Here is a copy of the information file included in the database archive/ To download this template, you can use the following link http://www.ddhsoftware.com/gallery.htmlSelect the Food and Drink Category The name of the entry is: Home Coffee Roasting Database **Disclaimer** I developed this applet for my own use. I have no connection with DDH Software except that of a satisfied customer. This applet does require HanDBase software, which can be obtained for a 30 day Trial period from DDH Software Todd Database Information follows: November 9, 2000 This is a modification of my original "Home Coffee Roaster database that I uploaded back in January 2000. After using the original database version, I found that the layout had a number of fields and linked files that I really didn't use. For example, I don't do formal cupping sessions, so I never used that linked file. I've incorporated Pricing and Cupping information in the main file. Most of this data comes from coffee information and cupping results by my supplier of choice: Sweet Maria's http:\\www.sweetmarias.com Sweet Maria's offers some of the best information on the joys of home roasting coffee and it's an excellent place to purchase green coffee beans and roasting supplies. Many thanks to Tom Owens! These databases are compiled using the HanDBase data software available from DDH Software www.ddhsoftware.com I don't personally keep track of every detail on every roast. Once I know the characteristics of a particular coffee and how it behaves in my roasters, I can set the roaster, dump in the coffee and let it go. (always keeping an eye and ear to the process!) Other times I track details. Use what you want, and ignore the rest. I've made just about every field possible a Pop-up field; this allows consistent and fast data entry. You can easily modify any pop-up entries I filter on the Active check box, so I only see my "active" (coffee that I have in stock) coffees. Each order is tracked in a separate record. Once I've used all of the coffee from an order, I change the Active check box to Inactive. This way I can keep historical data without cluttering up my list. When I place a subsequent order for same coffee, I copy the existing record to preserve all of the information, then change the order date. I like to do this to keep track of how long an order lasts, etc. I have not altered any field orders within the files so that the HanDBase Ver. 2.50 Desktop software can be used to update all fields your PC as well. I have included a very limited amount of data in the files, just enough to give you a feel for how it works This version uses one main file: Coffee Roaster and two linked files: Roastings and Coffee Notes Home Roaster fields layout / description Field Name Type Pop-Up Description Coffee Name Text No Name of the coffee Country Text Yes Origin Country Region Text Yes Region the coffee is grown Active Check-box No Used for filtering Order Date Date No Date coffee was ordered Order Qty Number Yes Amount (weight) of coffee Order Price Number No Priced paid for coffee Per Pound Computed No Order Amount / Order Price Linked Records Roasting Coffee Notes - Details - Grade Text Yes Coffee Grade Process Text Yes Process Type Crop Text Yes Crop year Appearance Text Yes Size/screen etc. Mark Text Yes Mark name Varietal Text Yes Varietal Information - Sweet Maria's Cupping - Fragrance Number Yes Cupping results Aroma Number Yes Cupping results Brightness Number Yes Cupping results Body Number Yes Cupping results Flavor Number Yes Cupping results Finish Number Yes Cupping results Score Number No Average of all cupping results Roasting Text No Sweet Maria's roasting recommendations Suggestions Retire Check-box No Check if coffee no longer available Order Check-box No Check if this should be ordered Roastings fields / description Field Name Type Pop-Up Description Coffee Name Linked No Name of the coffee - Automatically linked Date Date No Date of roast - Defaults to current date Time Time (hhmmss) No Time of roast - Defaults to current time Device Text Yes Roaster used - Defaults set to HW Precision Setting Number Yes Setting used on roaster Qty Number Yes Amount roasted - By volume or by weight Roast Name Text Yes Roast name - Pop Up table Comments Text Yes Roast comments -Roast Details - Room Temp Number Yes Ambient (room) temperature 1st Crack Number Yes Time first crack begins in mm.ss 2nd Crack Number Yes Time Second Crack begins in mm.ss Final Roast Number Yes Top Roasting Temperature Temp Total Roast Number Yes Total Time of roast cycle Time Surface Text Yes Bean surface condition Chaff Text Yes Amount of chaff produced Roast Number Unique No Roast counter (automatically assigned) Coffee Notes is a generic file for recording almost any type of comment information about a particular coffee.
