Tom is kind of an intense guy. Wouldn't it be fun to show up at his store
in person and after the inevitable, "Say, it really is you! Wow!" and all
that... then pull out a list of 15 coffees and say you want a pound of
each, please. Oops, did I type that out loud?
Tom is anything but intense. He's a laid back California surfer/biker dude.
To understand Tom, you have to understand this: The last thing he wants in
his heart of hearts is to be a big time business success because that would
distract him from the business of discovering coffees, assessing them,
determining what the best roast would be for each, and then communicating
the results to fellow coffeeists. The reason that he is so successful with
us is that he is, in fact, a coffee-hobbyist just like us who, in order to
pursue his hobby to its fullest, had to start a business to give him the
time to do it. The Catch (22) is that the very business that gives him the
time to pursue his hobby, threatens to make him too busy to enjoy his hobby.
He may never let me in the store again after this.
