Topic: Rocky Question (23 msgs / 497 lines)
1) From: Jim Karavias
I just received my Rocky from UPS. Very nice piece of equipment! I have a
question for the eperienced Rocky owners out there. How much play is in the
large threaded metal burr holders on your machines? I'm speaking of the
large threaded mounts to which the burrs are attached and that are
responsible for maintaining the correct distance between the burrs. On my
machine there's about a mm of play at the top of the bean hopper. Just
wondering if this is a problem since play would seem to make it difficult to
get a consistent grind. Its not rotational play but more a wobble in the
bean hopper. Kind of feels 'loose'.
Thanks!
Jim

I always assumed that the wobble was play in the adjustment mechanism.
Notice how the adjustment release button wiggles when you wobble it.

Mike...I'm a happy camper. Its a SS doserless.
The grind looks and feels good to me although I haven't actually been able
to test it since my La Pavoni is STILL not here. Patience is a virtue?
Ugh! I have greens, a BBQ roaster, a grinder and a tamper but no La Pavoni.

Jim,
I was one of the 20 or so people in the group buy from this list. I ordered
2 doserless grinders.. I gave one to my son and he tells me that it's
tight. Mine, on the other hand, had that same "wobble", which resulted in
an inability to get a consistent grind.
I contacted the dealer and he sent me a new upper burr carrier. This has
solved the problem.
There were a couple of threads on alt.coffee about this...It seems that a
batch of these burr carriers got through Rancilio's quality control and
Rancilio is aware of the problem...
Wrapping a piece of Teflon tape around it will cure it, although, I don't
think one should have to fix a new product.
Ciao,
Angelo

I feel your La Pavoni pain.Just so you know, Rocky grinds great for ALL brewing types:-) I wassurprised at the improvement in the cup even Debi's work 4-cup dripper makeswith Rocky versus worn out Maestro.

Mike, what setting do you use for drip?  I use my Rocky for Espresso and Maestro for drip.  Thanks.

That's fairly typical of a Rocky. It will increase some as the
threads wear in over the first months of use. Some posters have
wrapped the threads with Teflon plumber's tape to eliminate it,
although I haven't seen much feedback on how long that lasts.
Best,

Angelo,
Thanks for passing on that info. I was thinking that maybe I had become too
obsessive. Is that possible? ;-)
I'll call the retailer on Monday.
Thanks.

Angelo -
I e-mailed my retailer and got a very prompt reply with an offer to exchange
the upper burr plage. They're sending one out this week. Hope it solves
the problem.

Jim,
It should do it. I haven't heard of any of the others having the bottom
burr as the villain. Let's just hope I'm right...:-)

My new (to me) Rocky arrived today. It is the doser model. What is the
recommended way to get the fresh grounds when they are not going to be used
in an espresso machine?
Thanks.

When I grind for drip I have a small plastic dish that just barely
fits under the forks on my doser. I simply empty the doser into it.
I have a small wooden chopstick that I use to keep the chute clean as
well.

Not to be a PITA, but take the doser off.
Several years ago when we a had a 20 Rocky group buy, 18 out of 20 ( I
think) were doserless.

I removed the forks completely and use a metal cup that just fits under the
doser but holds enough for a full pot of coffee. I find it just slightly
less convenient to fill my portafilter. I use a bamboo skewer to help empty
the doser and chute because it has a fairly sharp point that cleans out the
groove on the inside of the doser which the revolving scrapers miss.

The cup I have, I just place the pf upside down over, and then rotate 180.

Gary,
Like Elliot, I removed the plastic portafilter holder from underneath the
doser, I don't have any problem holding the portafilter while I dispense
into it, and it's easier to grind into a small container. I also removed
the finger guard from the bean hopper and the plate on top of the doser
blades. I just measure what I'm going to grind, grind and dose it all and
use a small brush to sweep the doser and chute clean when done in the
morning. If you are concerned about the doser blades not sweeping clean
enough, you can remove them and use some electrical tape to make them fit
tightly and sweep cleaner. I did that mod too but it may be overkill.
Getting rid of the plate on top of the blades makes it much easier to sweep
clean with a small brush.
Ross
