Well, I dont' have a HotTop yet, but my Alp sure is great! I was roasting 4
batches at a time using dual Poppery IIs (the RACR) which was enough for two
days. Every other day I was roasting just for the "normal / daily" coffee
and then at least another time for something "special"... I love that Bali
Shinzan Arabica!!! Once I got the Alp, I roasted even more because it's
easier and well... roast more at a time. I enjoy roasting, so I roast. I
love the smells, the sounds, and eventually... the taste!
Well... I'm having trouble drinking as much coffee as I can roast. I have
found the Alp to be very consistant. I roast on "7" for a perfect roast,
everytime. "8" gets it a bit far into second crack for my taste. I roasted
my first batch on "9" and they went real far into second crack and ended up
quite oily. Who says an Alp can't roast dark! Anyway... so far, it's been
very repeatable, effortless, and roasts perfectly.
So, for those of you out there reading all about the HotTop and wishing you
had one, but can't afford it... the Alp is a LOT cheaper and really does a
great job. The Alp is a VERY capable coffee roaster.
...and that's my story and I'm sticking to it... until I get a Hottop too.
As a side note, I just ordered 5 lbs. of the Kowali Blue Mountain. I can't
wait until that arrives! I know some of you already have some. What size
are the beans? Are they Alpable?
