Topic: Down the drain (23 msgs / 267 lines)
1) From: Anthony
Hi, all.
Do coffee grounds really plug up the sink drain? I throw the grounds
out with the trash (no garden). After all, it's already ground up, just
like food that's been through the in-sink-erator, so it should just wash
down with a good stream of water, right?

If you live in the city and are not connected to a septic tank-no
problems-in fact the rats and other critters living in our subterrainan
world might just appreciate a little caffine now and then. All it will do
to a septic tank is fill it up resulting in an early pump out since grounds
will probably break down fairly slowly unlike what has been through our GI
tracts.

I ALWAYS put the grounds down the drain. Never had any trouble with
this.
Been it the current house 12+ years - no clogged kitchen sink.
I've put the grounds down the drain every place I've lived, and my kids
think I've lived a long, long time!

Same here. Someone once told me that the acidity of coffee grounds actually
cleans the pipes on the way down. And if thats the case, I have the
cleanest pipes in San Diego County.

Anthony;
When you use the garbage disposal you do so with water pouring. If you
dump the grounds straight into the sink and don't pour LOTS of water behind
them you can wind up with them hung in the trap - or at a Y. The good
news is that a little liquid plumber moves them right along again.

I've been doing it for 30 years and haven't had a clog yet. I undrstand
that dumping them with bacon grease is a really bad idea, though.

Don't dump them! Bacon grease mixed with spent coffee grounds is
probably more nutritious and tasty than half the processed foods sold
in supermarkets these days. Having gone through a busy patch lately
which forced me to try some of them (had to survive on leftover bits
of homeroast dumped into a Ziploc in the freezer), I know of what I speak.
Anyone know where I can get a decent metal tamper for my Pavoni (49mm
diameter basket)? Thanks. --PR

Shall I bow to the higher (?) authorities or quote the time honored
maxim of all free thinkers: "No deference will be made to authority;
data based on experimentation (empirical knowledge) provide the only
indicators worthy of respect". (With, of course, no disrespect intended
to the two sources mentioned in your message.)
In this case the least that might suffice as valid indicators would be a
number of laborious and time consuming experiments involving the
disassembly and careful examination of a "dirty" disposal mechanism and
it's subsequent reexamination after having been subjected to the bacon
grease/coffee grounds disposal as well as some disposals involving
various "control" materials/experiments

I've been taught that you can flush the grounds down
the sink if you use enough hot water and if you run
them through a cycle of the disposer it will help
sharpen the blades and clean the gunk from the bottom.

Sorry, but I can't resist this thread. I've put them down the drain in two
houses for 5 years!! Never have I had a bit of trouble with the plumbing.
Let alone any do to the bean grounds.

Well both the subject and "ANONYMOUS" aspect are fitting.
Freud did not hide behind anonyonimity nor has time obscured either his name
or his revelations; he immersed himself in a quest for understanding the
essence of the human persona and psycho dynamics. As far as the "uniqueness"
of the human minds' focus, the idea that this is an either/or situation is
ludicrous. Many individuals focus rarely if at all on the concept of any
belief system or deity and amongst these individuals the sum total of
concepts that are focused upon is as myriad as the stars in a typical
galaxy. Amongst those "praising god" are a panoply of hypocrites, sadists
and various other unsavory personality types including the vast majority of
our congressional leaders, who go to church on Sunday and screw the citizenry
the rest of the week.
The mind and the cosmos are simply not that simple.

I can see why the author of that quote would want to remain anonymous.

Hi Ted, the Other Ted and Group;
Right, right, right! I submitted the Freud quote with the recognition of both
it's inappropriateness and its likely lack of popularity.
Of the list members (a few well chosen and witty comments aside) one person
contacted me directly with a lengthy suggestion that I read the bible and seek
gods' enlightenment. Only one chose to post an anonymous quote in response to
my lengthy and (I thought) deeply insightful quote from Freud.
To the Freud drinking coffee contributor; I'd bet he drank his share and then
some as he did some dabbling in even more stimulating substances.
To the group; assuming I get no additional superficial frontal attacks I'm
quite content to let things "get back on track"; i.e. let caffeine rather than
psycho dynamics hold the floor.
