Sounds to me like the mall space planning agent messed up big time when
locating these two stores side by side. On the other hand, Barry Jarrett of
Riley's Coffee roasts in a mall and I've never heard him mention anyone
complaining except for the time he caught the vacuum cleaner on fire while
vacuuming hot chaff from the roaster. Seems the parade to the door with the
smoking vacuum was a bit stinky.
Getting along with neighbors is a skill we all should have learned in
Kindergarten.

I've been there! I'm originally from Sioux Falls and go up a time or two a
year on visits. When I've been there at Thanksgiving and they've been
roasting it looked to me like people were drawn *into* the place, not driven
away. That's probably the real complaint of the place next door.
There aren't too many places in malls where you can get a good cup of coffee
but Great Plains is *definitely* one of them - those bags of coffee beans
and the roaster aren't just there for decoration.
Checking the Empire Mall's web site http://www.theempiremall.com)I see
that they're bracketed by the Karmelcorn and 'space 61, available for lease'
so I wonder who's complaining. Probably the upscale menswear place in the
next spot over - I can see guys deflecting from clothes shopping for a cup
of coffee - especially when there's a large machine to watch.
Of course, you said Great *Northern* and this is Great *Plains* - perhaps
another in-mall roaster?
Enjoy!
