Topic: A clean & quiet Alp.. (4 msgs / 76 lines)
1) From: coffenut
Folks,
I'd recently been hearing some squeaking sounds from the drive cog area on
my Alp during the first 4-5 minutes of each roast. Talked with Anthony
Lemme about the problem and he advised me to use only one drop of machine
oil on either side of the cog and at the other end of the drive shaft on
both sides of the free roller. If you look at the Alp (cog side), you'll
notice there's a concealed drive shaft that runs the length of that side. I
was getting the squeaking at the cog end of the shaft, but gave all the
rollers a drop of oil anyway. Problem is completely gone, so from now on,
I'll add a drop or two of oil every 4-6 mos to my preventive maintenance on
the Alp.
Figured I'd also begin by doing a thorough cleaning too. Used the Cleancaf
by Urnex and it worked like a dream (thanks to the person that previously
shared that tip). I mixed up only half a bag of the powder with a cup of
water and only needed a few ounces. So, I put the rest in a mason jar and
stored it for next time. Using a toothbrush, you can get into some of the
tighter places with the Cleancaf. Anyway, the Alp is sparkling now and the
results are better than I'd seen when using alcohol.

Coffeenut:
Thanks for the tip on how to oil the drive shaft on the Alp. Just
yesterday I started to hear a squeaking, and now you leap in with a
solution!
And thanks again for explaining how you used the Urnex (Cleancaf)
solution. Gotta get some of that as well, as my poor Alp is pretty
grubby. Like you, I had been using alcohol on a swab, but it has its
limits.
And happy New Year's to you and all . . .

I'd wondered about urnex, but I used rubbing alcohol yesterday and had
great results too.
