Topic: 'Returned mail: User unknown' Problem (4 msgs / 75 lines)
1) From: Gene Smith
I also am continuing to receive the 'Returned mail: User unknown' messages
every time I post to the list. The messages invariably refer to:
gor5853970
as being an invalid address. If Mr. or Ms. gor5853970 is not a member of
this list, then why is mail being sent to that address through the list
distribution?
Just for the heck of it, I typed www.cs.com into my browser window and got
sent to Compuserve. So why is an address at Compuserve being rejected by
AOL? Has someone on the list (or previously on the list) transferred their
account from Compuserve to AOL, and these attempted deliveries are an
artifact of the remnants of that transaction?
I keep believing there is a way to shut this annoyance off...but it may be
just an item of faith that can't be tested.

I presume this has been tried before, but I'm giving it a go anyway...
I've just subscribed as gor5853970 and will attempt to unsub once
that address is approved.
It might help, and I can't imagine it will hurt unless we get two
"returned mails" for every post ;)

Don't you need access to that address? You have to send your
(un)subscription requests from the address you're subscribing...don't you??
Not a very secure method if anybody could subscribe anybody.

Certainly it's possible to initiate subscribing an address, but I can't
recall if an email confirmation needs to be responded to to activate the
sub.
I believe you can only unsub from the list through the web and not via
listserv/majordomo commands. The address ishttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/options/homeroast/youremailer.here
Having said that, the subscription hasn't been approved as yet so I
can't test the remainder of the theory.
